Cancer is a very serious and life-threatening disease that starts in the cells of an organism and spreads. In a process of normal development, old cells die and new ones develop in their place; however, sometimes something goes wrong and new cells appear and grow, old cells die prematurely. Extra cells form tumors which can be either benign or malignant. The former are not harmful while the latter are and these are the ones that are called cancer. These tumors spread to the cells of other organs and cause irreparable damage.
Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases. There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Most cancers are named for where they start. For example, lung cancer starts in the lung, and breast cancer starts in the breast. The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis. Symptoms and treatment depend on the cancer type and how advanced it is. Most treatment plans may include surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Some may involve hormone therapy, biologic therapy, or stem cell transplantation.
At the present moment severe stages of cancer cannot be treated; however, if the condition is detected at early stages, various options are available – surgery and chemo/radiation therapies as well as medication treatment.
