Under the term of blood pressure is understood the pressure of the blood in a person’s arteries. Some pressure is needed for a blood to run down the arteries and veins in order for it to be brought to all essential organs.
The most common harmful blood pressure related condition is hypertension – or high blood pressure. It is the condition when the pressure of blood in arteries is higher than normal. The symptoms are not always very vivid; in some cases a person may be unaware of having any problems. However, the ailment is very dangerous as it can cause very serious consequences such as heart failure, attack or stroke.
There are several types of medications that are designed to treat hypertension. They are called blood pressure medications, or antihypertensive drugs. Among them are thiazide-diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and angiotensin receptor blockers.
The medications are usually used either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs. Most of them are prescription drugs that should be taken only with the recommendation of a therapist.
